The main intended purpose of the Microzonation study is to combine different information about
the seismic risk in Vienna (hazard scenarios, local subsoil condition, building-stock, etc.).
All the results should be joined into a unified seismic hazard map.
This is primarily useful to identify the most vulnerable parts of urban areas, what can be
used in the existing catastrophe management to organize the rescue teams in case of a significant
earthquake event. In addition the identification of the more vulnerable seismic zones within the
city can have a direct influence on urban planning. In case of existing public utilities and
infrastructure in very vulnerable areas this knowledge may have an influence on the ongoing safety precautions.
